D&A Lab brief introduction

D&A Lab (Digital Design of Art and Architecture Laboratory) is a professional parametric design and educational laboratory dedicated to long-term research in digital design, architecture, and art education. As a nonprofit organization affiliated with a national university, it regularly collaborates with leading design schools and professional architecture organizations to provide international-level expertise and workshops with multinational faculty, as well as support underprivileged students eager to learn. In addition, D&A Lab offers free lessons to teachers and students in related fields across Taiwan.

In recent years, D&A Lab has focused on researching and developing “Construction Industry 4.0,” achieving significant outcomes in digital design, robotic applications, and architectural construction and design. Their research has been included in the Autodesk University 2021 International Program. In the fields of design and education, the lab has received awards such as the Red Dot Award: Brands & Communication Design, the Green Product Award (including the Best Concept special prize), the LIV Hospitality Design Awards – Emerging Architect of the Year, and the Young Visionary Architecture Competition. Since 2021, D&A Lab began assisting the Ministry of Labor in training national team competitors for the WorldSkills international competition in the design category, with the aim of fostering future industry collaboration and delivering combined SCSR + USR impact.

Dr. Shi-Yen Wu, the founder of D&A Lab, specializes in design and art education. He is also the National Expert for the Ministry of Labor in the WorldSkills International Competition (Visual Merchandising). Dr. Wu holds a Master of Arts from the National Taipei University of the Arts and a Ph.D. in Architecture from the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology. He currently serves in the Department of Digital Content and Technology at the National Taichung University of Education and has been selected as one of the visiting scholars in the Ministry of Education’s Taiwan Talent Promotion Program. His recent work emphasizes digital innovation, new media art, and design. He has organized the Tibet Film Festival and numerous international workshops in collaboration with institutions such as University College London (UCL), the Architectural Association (AA), ARUP, the University of Kent, Zaha Hadid Architects, AECOM, Stella McCartney, and ETH Zurich. He has received multiple internationally recognized awards in architecture and design.

Faculty and students of D&A Lab have received Special Research Project Grants for projects such as “Big Data Transformed into Art – Taking Taiwan’s Declining Birthrate as an Example” and “Robotic Parameterized Control and Integrated Application Development of a Single-Chip Steel Bending Simulation Teaching Machine.” Their research on robotic arm automation was also featured in the Autodesk University 2021 International Program. They have received awards including the LIV Hospitality Design Awards – Rookie Architect of the Year, Architectural and Interior Design Awards, British Young Visionary Architecture Competition 2021, Canada CBDX International Design Competition (World Top 25), Red Dot Award: Brands & Communication Design, and the Green Concept Award – Best Concept.

Team members have also been offered paid overseas internships and were all awarded the Art and Elite Cultivation Program Scholarship. In 2021, D&A Lab members participated for the first time in the Architecture Master Prize (AMP), with all 13 submitted works receiving awards, including New Discovery of the Year – Interior Design. They also received the European Property Awards, further demonstrating the lab’s strong achievements in research and international competitions.
