About D&A Lab

The D&A Lab (Digital Design of Art and Architecture Laboratory) is a professional parametric design and educational laboratory. As a nonprofit organization affiliated with a national university, it has long been dedicated to providing public education and research in digital design, architecture, and art. By regularly collaborating with world-renowned architecture schools and professional organizations, the lab offers top-tier technical skills from prestigious international institutions. It also partners with multinational educators to host international workshops and assists underprivileged students who are eager to learn. Additionally, the D&A Lab offers free lessons for teachers and students within the same field in Taiwan.

Over the past few years, the D&A Lab has focused its research and development on “Digital Innovation Applications” and “Manufacturing Industry 4.0,” achieving significant breakthroughs in digital design, robotic applications, and architectural construction and design. Notably, its research content was featured in the Autodesk University 2021 international courses. In the fields of design and education, the lab has won numerous accolades, including the Red Dot Award: Brands & Communication Design, the Green Product Award, the Green Product Award – Special Prize (The Best Concept Award), the LIV Hospitality Design Awards (Emerging Architect of the Year), and the Young Visionary Architecture Competition. In 2021, the D&A Lab began assisting the Ministry of Labor in training national competitors for the Visual Merchandising/Exhibition Design category at the WorldSkills Competition. Moving forward, the lab hopes to collaborate with more companies to maximize the synergistic effects of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and University Social Responsibility (USR).

Dr. Shi-Yen Wu, who focuses on design and art education, is the founder of the D&A Lab and an International Referee for the Exhibition Design category of the WorldSkills Competition. He holds a Master’s degree from the Graduate Institute of Arts and Technology at Taipei National University of the Arts, and a Ph.D. in Architecture from National Taiwan University of Science and Technology. Dr. Wu currently serves in the Department of Digital Content and Technology at National Taichung University of Education and is a visiting scholar selected for the Ministry of Education’s Taiwan Talent Promotion Program. In recent years, his work has primarily centered on digital innovation technology, new media art creation, and design. He has organized the Tibet Film Festival and hosted multiple international workshops in collaboration with prestigious institutions and firms, including UCL, the AA School, ARUP, the University of Kent, Zaha Hadid Architects, AECOM, Stella McCartney, and ETH Zurich. Furthermore, he is the recipient of numerous internationally renowned architecture and design awards.

Teachers and students at the D&A Lab have received the Research Grant for University Students for projects such as “Transforming Big Data into Art: Taking Taiwan’s Declining Birthrate as an Example” and “Robotic Parameterized Control and Integrated Application Development of a Single-Chip Steel Bending Technology Simulation Teaching Machine.” Their research on robotic arm automation was also featured in the Autodesk University 2021 international courses. Additionally, the team has won numerous prestigious awards, including the LIV Hospitality Design Awards (Emerging Architect of the Year, Architectural Design Award, and Interior Design Award), the 2021 British Young Visionary Architecture Competition (Young Visionary Architect Award), the Canada 2021 CBDX: B(OR)DERLANDS International Design Ideas Competition (World Top 25), the Red Dot Award: Brands & Communication Design, the Green Concept Award (Professional Winner), and the Green Product Award – Special Prize (The Best Concept Award).

Team members are offered opportunities for paid overseas internships, and all have successfully qualified for the “Art and Design Elite Cultivation Program Scholarship.” In 2021, design works by D&A Lab members were entered into the Architecture MasterPrize (AMP) for the first time. Remarkably, all 13 submitted works won awards, including the “New Discovery of the Year – Interior Design” title. Furthermore, the team emerged as a winner at the International Property Awards (Europe), demonstrating their outstanding and prolific achievements in both research and competitive design.
